Oh hi everyone, I’m Raj. As Account Manager my main job at Planet is to look after our clients, understand their briefs and schedule the work into the studio. However, when it came time to create wedding stationery for my own upcoming nuptials - it was me delivering the brief! Here's my experience of slipping on the client's shoes:
With my wedding a year away, I wanted to get organised with the wedding stationery early on. Day-to-day I work really closely with our clients to make sure we work to a brief that really delivers. This can involve meetings with key decision makers to really get to the bottom of their challenges and really understand what is needed. It's all part of the service. Luckily for the team, on this occasion I had a really clear idea of what I wanted.
I broke down the brief into two phases. The first phase included designing a logo for the pair of us and creating the all important “save the date” cards. Many of my friends already call us “Marj” (Mark and Raj) so this is what I wanted our logo to say. Phase two will be completed next year when we need the invitations and other collateral. I explained the colour theme and sent Phil the pinterest board of theme ideas. Pinterest is a dream for inspiration; but also easy to get carried away!
It’s always useful when clients can provide examples of what they like to the designers and explain why they like it. Explaining the logo was simple; I knew exactly what I wanted. I really like script typography because it can be modern and elegant at the same time. Alongside a circular stamp icon, which I can see working well across all our wedding stationery.
Phil - our Creative Director, got started picking out a few typefaces which could work nicely to form the logo. He showed me 27 different typefaces options, spelling out MARJ, this gave me a big selection to see how each typeface worked. I sat down with Mark and went through the options together and narrowed it down to a few favourites.
Using our favourite typefaces, Phil implemented them into a few logo designs. Each option had a few variations in between each design. I sat down with Phil while he explained each logo and his reasoning behind them. I was grinning from ear-to-ear because they really were, exactly what I wanted. I discussed them with Mark before making a final decision.
We went through the logos together to see which ones we liked best. We agreed that page one was our favourite selection of logos as we could see them working perfectly with our modern wedding theme.
Although it was a very quick decision process, I was really drawn to all the logo options. So making a final decision was difficult because I wanted them all. In the end we opted for this modern logo (below) to reflect our wedding theme.
Save the dates
Phil spent some time drafting up some ‘save the date’ options. We opted for a double sided postcard with the logo on the back and information on the front. He put together a couple of options for the back which both looked great. Typically Mark and I chose opposite ones - before going with my option of course! There wasn’t any need for amends because everything we wanted, was nailed (music to a designer’s ears).
As I write this, Phil and I have been excitedly going through paper samples, envelopes and stamps. We’re in a designer’s heaven right now with all the possibilities. Phil’s passion was infectious and made me feel really excited for the wedding and the other bits we can create using the designs.*
My experience as a client was a really enjoyable one, and I got to see a project from a totally different perspective. Although I had a very clear idea of what I wanted, being a client brought into focus just how many factors can come into the process for our clients, i.e. personal preferences, changes to the brief, altering circumstances, budgets, along with other external influences that may effect the job.
I put a lot of faith into Phil’s creativity because I trusted his design skills implicitly. With his 20+ years experience I knew I was in good hands. It was quite a big deal for me, as I’ve been running my own wedding blog for the past 5 years; so I come into contact with all things ‘weddings’ on a daily basis. It some ways that has put pressure on my own wedding because of the high expectations. (Trying not to be a Bridezilla…!)
