Is professional logo design worth investing in?

As a design agency we often get asked about logo design and whether it’s worth paying more for it... and the short answer, is yes.

We know what you’re thinking, of course we’re going to say that - but if you bear with us we’ll use the rest of this article to show you why it’s such an important element of your brand.

It’s one of the first things people see

We all know how easy it is to identify the big brand names with just a glance at their logos. It’s the first thing people notice on your business cards, banner, website, social media profiles and other marketing materials. First impressions are lasting so you need to make it count with a well thought-out logo.

A better, lasting mark

This is a very obvious point to make but so many people overlook it and opt to use budget options or create their own. The amount you’re willing to spend will be reflected in the time and effort skilled designers can spend on your logo, and the ideas and thought processes behind it. This may sound trivial but if you take a look at some of the most recognisable logos, you’ll be able to see that attention to detail is really worth it.

Amazon

Now the world’s most valuable brand, it’s sensible to take a look at the Amazon logo first. You will have seen it thousands of times but have you ever noticed that the arrow underneath the lettering not only looks like the smile of a happy customer, but also points at letters ‘A’ and ‘Z’ showing that they sell everything from ‘a’ to ‘z’.

Toblerone

The Toblerone logo features the Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland because that’s where the chocolate bar was created by Theodor Tobler back in 1908. If you look closely at the mountain you’ll see an outline of a bear, which represents the honey element of the famous chocolate triangles. Clever isn’t it!

FedEx

This is another logo that you will have seen all over the place, and compared to the others in this list maybe looks a little dull. It’s only two colours and a chunky typeface after all - or is it? Take a closer look at the negative space between the ‘E’ and the ‘X’ and you’ll see a hidden arrow. Not so dull after all.

Beats by Dr Dre

Let’s take a look at one more because if you take nothing else from this article you’ll have a few good facts for when you’re next at a pub quiz or out with your friends.

Beats by Dre looks very simple at first glance, it’s just the ‘b’ for Beats in a circle. But the circle isn’t just a circle, it also represents a human head wearing headphones (from the side). Go on take another look and you’ll see it.

Explaining your brand

After the excitement of all the hidden meanings above, you’ll understand why we’re making this next point. A great logo will help explain your brand and what it stands for, as well being a memorable mark that sits well in it's industry sector.

A logo is so much more than a bit of text in a nice font with your brand colour, when designed properly it tells your story.

Showing your commitment

Investing in logo design and branding shows the world that you are serious and in it for the long haul. It's an essential step in being able to create a strong outward profile which creates trust with your customers; if they can see you're not taking shortcuts and are investing in your business, they're more likely to do the same.
